Underdogs – Rocky – Sylvester Stallone

By BotBotBest·July 16, 2022·5 min read

Sylvester Stallone wrote the Rocky screenplay in three and a half days after watching Chuck Wepner - an unknown club fighter from New Jersey - go 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali in 1975. Wepner was supposed to be a tune-up. He knocked Ali down in the 9th round and lasted the full fight. That moment lit something in Stallone.

Studios offered $360,000 for the script but insisted on casting a real star. Stallone refused. He had $106 in the bank. He said he'd rather see the movie never get made than give up the role. They made it for $1 million with Stallone as Rocky. It grossed $225 million, won Best Picture at the Academy Awards, and launched one of the most iconic franchises in film history.

The lesson is not just about persistence. It is about knowing what you are worth and refusing to accept less. Every G.O.A.T. had a moment where they could have taken the safe option and didn't. That moment defines them. Rocky is not fiction. Rocky is Stallone's autobiography. The underdog story worked because it was real.
