10 Ways To Be The Best Person You Can Be

  1. SAY YES TO WHAT MATTERS
    • Focus
    • Requires elimination
    • He who is everywhere is nowhere
    • Say no to the inessential & double down on what is essential
  2. BE DISCIPLINED
    • Marcus Aurelius says “you could be good today instead you choose tomorrow”
    • We know how to do but we don’t do it.  We don’t take the steps
    • Discipline of action – ACTION NOT WORDS
    • take the first step
  3. DON’T SUFFER IN ADVANCE
    • Don’t suffer in imagination
    • Don’t suffer in advance
    • Anxiety does not solve the situation & often makes it worse
  4. STOP WASTING TIME
    • Stop wasting time focusing on things outside your control
    • Stop wasting time on things outside your control & what other people think
  5. CONTROL YOUR EMOTIONS
    • The way we respond to something often makes it worse.  We tell ourselves it’s “unfair”.  We were “screwed over”.
    • “There’s no problem so bad that you can’t make it worse.” – astronaut Chris Hadfield
    • We make a bad thing even worse and then complain we can’t get over it.
    • “Who  then is invincible?  the one who cannot be upset by anything outside his reasoned choice…”  – Epictetus
  6. FOCUS ON HOW FAR YOU HAVE LEFT TO GO
    • Don’t focus on how far you’ve come.  Focus on how far you have left to go.
    • “There is nothing less philosophical than someone who puts on airs about their progress, about their study of wisdom, about their breakthroughs.”  -Epictetus
    • Philosophy is a lifelong pursuit – Marcus Aurelius
    • In self improvement, as you get better you should see more and more things left to get better at.  Don’t get complacent.  Don’t get egotistical.
  7. STAND UP FOR OTHERS
    • All the great moments in stoic history involve standing up for the little guy
    • Use power and privelege to ease the burden and make life better for other people
    • Justice is a core stoic virtue
    • Just that you DO THE RIGHT THING the rest doesn’t matter
    • “The fruit of this life is good character and acts for the common good” – Marcus Aurelius
    • Speak up and stand up for people who can’t stand up and speak for themselves
  8. FOCUS ON WHAT’S IN YOUR CONTROL
    • 99% of the things that you spend time on don’t matter
    • We focus on things that are not up to us
    • “The chief task in life is to seperate things that are in our control from those that are not in our control.” -Epictetus
  9. BE WILLING TO LOOK STUPID
    • “If you wish to improve you must be willing to look clueless or stupid about some things” – Epictetus
    • Be willing to not care about stuff – the Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*#k
    • You have to be willing to be bad at stuff at the beginner stages
    • This is how you get from where you are to where you want to go
  10. SEEK CHALLENGES
    • Get up early
    • Workout
    • Fast
    • “We should treat the body rigourously so it’s not disobedient to the mind” – Seneca
    • Deliberately challenge yourself
    • Build muscle, mental strength, fortitude to deal with setbacks, adversity
    • Be prepared – seek out ordinary challenges in the course of life that makes you better able to deal with the extreme challenges of life
